  • DirectAccess:

I learned about DirectAccess a few days ago and I must confess I wasn’t aware that it would only be made available at the time to Corporate customers. Remote users may use DirectAccess to connect securely to their corporate network without manually creating a VPN link. It is, in my opinion, a feature that will also be of benefit to small and medium-sized organizations. Maybe the fact that DirectAccess needs IPv6 and a PKI would cause Microsoft to think it’s too difficult for small IT departments.

  • BitLocker & BitLocker to Go:

I’ve written about those two features a lot already. So far as I know, there are many Vista computers out there that don’t have BitLocker for fixed drives. One explanation for this may be the complicated installation process. Perhaps a bigger consideration is that only Windows Vista Enterprise and Ultimate have access to this. I don’t know why Microsoft thinks BitLocker to Go is only required by Enterprise customers. Encryption of flash drives is useful for all Windows users. Anyway, I would consider using TrueCrypt instead.

  • Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Optimizations:

In server-computing VDI is the next step. Terminal Server solutions have always been appealing primarily to large corporations. I assume the same is true for VDI. In a server.

  • BranchCache:

There is no question that this is a traditional Enterprise feature since it typically has branches only for large organizations. BranchCache stores data on a local Windows Server 2008 R2 computer, or other Windows 7 PCs from remote file and Web servers. I haven’t tried it yet, but soon I intend to. It’s hard to tell if large companies are going to adopt such a function. I thought it came a few years too late. Most organizations used HTTP proxies some years ago to cache Web content. Those have become more or less superfluous due to higher and cheaper bandwidths. However, I do not think that Microsoft would add such a feature if it was not requested by Enterprise customers.

  • Enterprise Search Scopes:

Windows 7 has a modern search interface that allows you to browse through remote content such as Office SharePoint Server 2007, not just on your desktop. It’s a mystery to me what search functionality Windows 7 Enterprise would have that other Windows versions won’t have. Marketing text from Microsoft hasn’t made it clear to me. Windows 7 Professional could not help remote search? It’s also unclear how Search Server 2008 is related to Enterprise Search Scopes. Does this mean I can’t use a Windows 7 Professional Search Server 2008? I don’t believe it. I’ll have to wait for more technical details to comment on that feature further.

  • AppLocker:

This one has most shocked me. Tech restriction policies are available for both Business and Vista Enterprise. As a way, the successor of these Application Restriction Policies is AppLocker, though Windows 7 can support all approaches. AppLocker is my chosen new protection feature for Windows 7. It’s a shame that Enterprise PC’s will only be available. In my view, it’s the first Windows program restriction device that works well. Not only is it beneficial to discourage staff from playing games but it also protects against malware. I guess antivirus software vendors will have a hard time selling their products at today’s rates in the business sector.
